The oldest surviving photo of a car taken on the territory of Ukraine has been published. The photograph dates back to 1896, and was found by experts from the Historical Auto Club. This is reported by Auto-Consulting.
The photo was taken in Nikolaev. It featured the 1896 Benz Velo, the world's first mass-produced car.. Specifically, this car has a serial number 437 and is equipped with a 1.05-liter single-cylinder engine for 2.75 liters. Its maximum speed is 19 km/h.
It is noteworthy that the first car appeared in Nikolaev earlier than in Kyiv or Lvov (cars were brought to these cities in 1897). On the territory of Ukraine, only in Odessa the car appeared earlier.
For a long time, Benz Velo was the only car in Nikolaev, but in 1902 he suffered from a fire in a garage.
Nobody knew about this photo until recently. Previously, the oldest in Ukraine was considered a photo of Daimler Phoenix, which belonged to the Baron von Mecca family. He was made in the village of Kopylov in the Kiev region in 1898 or 1899.
Earlier, experts of the historical car club spoke about the Ukrainian designer of motorcycles JAWA.
